The short answer
A Pokémon promo card is a card given out outside boosters: in boxes and special products, at prereleases, at Pokémon League and events, at Pokémon Centers or with magazines. You recognise it by the black "PROMO" star in place of the set symbol. Most are worth little; those given out in very small numbers are worth a lot.
What is a promo card?
A promo is a card you don't open in a standard booster: you get it with a product, at an event, as a reward or as a gift.
A Pokémon promo has a black star with the word "PROMO" in place of the set symbol (the "Black Star Promos"), and a promo number specific to each series (SWSH050, for example). Other promos are cards from a set with an extra stamp.
How you get them
- In boxes, tins, mini tins and blisters: one or more promo cards alongside the boosters.
- In Elite Trainer Boxes, which often contain a promo card.
- At a new set's prereleases, with the prerelease kits.
- At Pokémon League and official tournaments, as rewards.
- At events: launches, Pokémon Day, championships, conventions.
- At Pokémon Centers, the official shops, and in their exclusive products.
- With magazines, video games, films or fast-food promotions (the McDonald's collections, for example).
Promotions change from year to year and country to country: check official announcements and shops near you.
How much is a promo card worth?
Most promos are printed in large numbers and are worth little. Those given out in very small numbers (tournament rewards, Staff cards, contests, limited events) can be worth much more. The most valuable in the gotem. catalogue right now:
