Starting a Pokémon collection
First pick a goal: a set, a character, or the cards you find beautiful. Open a few boosters for fun, but buy the specific cards you want as singles: it's often much cheaper. Put them in sleeves and a binder right away, and keep track of what you have so you know what's missing.

Pick your goal
A collection grows better with a goal. There's no best one: pick the one you enjoy, you can change it later.
A set
Every card in a set, each once (the complete set), or with all its versions (the master set). The most common goal.
Completing your Pokédex
One of each Pokémon, region by region: the ones you have in colour, the others in silhouette, a badge for each complete region.
The most beautiful artwork
Only the cards whose artwork you love, across all sets: a "favourites" binder.
A language
French, English or Japanese: each version has its price and its collectors.
Set your goal on gotem.
Pick a set: gotem. shows you what you have, what's missing, and what it's worth. You decide which rarities count.
Boosters or single cards?
Boosters
The thrill of opening, but random: lots of commons and duplicates, and rarely the card you want.
Single cards
You pay for exactly the card you want, at market price. To complete a set, it's usually the cheapest.
A real example today: in 30ᵉ Anniversaire, released on 16 September 2026, 116 out of 191 cards are worth less than €1 at market price. The most valuable ones are much rarer in boosters.
The most valuable in 30ᵉ Anniversaire right now
Mew30ᵉ Anniversaire€2,786
Mew30ᵉ Anniversaire€2,180
Mew30ᵉ Anniversaire€2,112
Lugia30ᵉ Anniversaire€275
Dracaufeu30ᵉ Anniversaire€179
Mew-ex30ᵉ Anniversaire€78.20
Today's market price, card in good condition.
Many collectors do both: a few boosters for fun, then the missing cards as singles.
Set your budget
- Decide on a monthly amount and stick to it: new products come out all year round.
- Keep some for protection: sleeves and a binder cost less than replacing a damaged card.
- Check the value before buying: every card has its market price on gotem., by language and condition.
- A price far below the market value, for a card or a sealed product, should put you on alert: fakes exist.

Frequently asked questions
Where to start a Pokémon collection?
First pick a goal: a set, a character, or the cards you find beautiful. Open a few boosters for fun, but buy the specific cards you want as singles: it's often much cheaper. Put them in sleeves and a binder right away, and keep track of what you have so you know what's missing.
Should you buy boosters or single cards?
Boosters for the surprise, singles to get a specific card: it's usually much cheaper than opening boosters hoping to pull it.
What budget to start with?
There's no minimum: many cards are worth less than a euro. Set yourself a monthly amount, and keep some for sleeves and a binder.
Which set to start with?
The one whose artwork you like, or the latest, still easy to find in shops. Each set's list, with its card prices, is on gotem.
French or Japanese cards?
Both are collected. Japanese cards usually come out earlier and have their own value; French cards can be read and played in France. Pick one language per goal, it's simpler.
How do I know what my collection is worth?
Add your cards to gotem. (or scan them): their market value shows, by language and condition, and updates every day.
How to avoid fake cards?
Buy in shops or from well-rated sellers, compare with the market price, and look at the card closely: print, colours, texture. An offer far below the market price should put you on alert.
