Pokémon card editions

1st edition, Shadowless, Unlimited: the editions of a Pokémon card

How to tell which print run you have, and why the same card has a completely different price depending on its edition.

Add my cards

Updated November 1, 2026 · Free · your phone and your computer

The short answer

Wizards-era Pokémon cards (1999 to 2002, Base Set to Neo Destiny) come in several print runs: the 1st edition, recognisable by its small black stamp on the left under the artwork, then the Unlimited, with no stamp. In English, the Base Set also has a Shadowless print, without the shadow to the right of the artwork. For the same card and condition, the 1st edition is usually worth the most, then Shadowless, then Unlimited.

The 1st edition

The 1st edition is the first print run of a Wizards of the Coast era set. It has a small black stamp on the left, just under the artwork. In the gotem. catalogue, every French card from Base Set to Neo Destiny exists in 1st edition; from Expedition (2002) onwards, there are none.

  • The stamp must be sharp and well printed: a blurry, crooked or raised stamp should alert you, as fake stamps added afterwards exist.
  • A card without a stamp is an Unlimited, or a Shadowless for the English Base Set.

Shadowless (English Base Set)

At the very start, the English Base Set was printed without the shadow along the right side of the artwork frame: that's Shadowless. Every 1st edition card of the English Base Set is Shadowless, and there's also a Shadowless print without a stamp, rarer than the Unlimited. This print doesn't exist in French.

To recognise it: look at the right edge of the artwork frame. A grey shadow means Unlimited; no shadow, Shadowless.

Unlimited

After the 1st edition, each set was reprinted without a stamp, in far larger numbers: that's Unlimited. It's the most common version of Wizards cards, and the cheapest in equal condition.

Reprints

Base Set 2 (2000)
An English reprint of Base Set and Jungle cards, with its own set symbol and no 1st edition.
Legendary Collection (2002)
An English reprint of cards from the first sets, known for its firework-pattern reverses.
Evolutions (2016)
An XY-era set that reuses the Base Set artwork with a modern design. It's in the gotem. catalogue.
Celebrations (2021)
For the 25th anniversary, the Classic Collection reprinted 25 famous cards, including the Base Set Charizard, with the 25th anniversary logo. They're in the gotem. catalogue ("Classic Collection" rarity).

A reprint is generally worth much less than the original, but some are sought after in their own right, like the Legendary Collection reverses.

Identify your edition in 30 seconds

  1. 1Look on the left, just under the artwork: a small black stamp means 1st edition.
  2. 2No stamp? On an English Base Set card, look at the right edge of the artwork frame: no shadow means Shadowless; a shadow, Unlimited.
  3. 3Look at the set symbol, on the right under the artwork: the Base Set has none, Base Set 2 and the Legendary Collection have their own.
  4. 4Look the card up in gotem. (name and number) to compare it with the official image.

How the edition affects value

For the same card and condition, the 1st edition is generally worth the most, then Shadowless, then Unlimited, then reprints. The gap can be very large on Base Set holo cards, especially in very good condition.

Add the right version to your collection

In gotem., every Wizards-era card has its own 1st edition version with its own price: pick the right one when you add it, with its condition, and your collection's value is accurate. Free.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Pokémon card is a 1st edition?⌄

Look on the left, just under the artwork: a 1st edition has a small black stamp. Only Wizards-era cards (Base Set to Neo Destiny) have one.

Do French Pokémon cards have a 1st edition?⌄

Yes, for Wizards-era sets: from Base Set to Neo Destiny, every French card exists in 1st edition in the gotem. catalogue.

What is a Shadowless card?⌄

A print of the English Base Set without the shadow to the right of the artwork frame. Every 1st edition of the English Base Set is Shadowless.

Does Shadowless exist in French?⌄

No, it's a print of the English Base Set.

Why don't recent cards have a 1st edition?⌄

The 1st edition stopped after Neo Destiny, in 2002. Recent cards have other versions: reverse, stamps, promos.

Is a 1st edition always worth more?⌄

In equal condition, generally yes. But condition matters enormously: a worn 1st edition is worth far less than the same one in perfect condition.

How do I add a 1st edition in gotem.?⌄

Open the card, pick the "1st edition" version when adding it, then its condition: it counts at the 1st edition price in your collection.
